In Oak we have been learning about ‘The Normans and Castles’.
The children have found out about the Norman invasion of England in 1066. They have enjoyed learning about the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings. They were surprised to find out that when King Edward III died, Harold Godwinson was chosen by the King’s council to succeed Edward as King Harold II of England but William Duke of Normandy also wanted to be the next king and claimed Edward had also promised him the throne.
We looked at the Bayeux Tapestry and how this retells the events of the Battle of Hastings and how this historical artifact can teach us about the past.
